We (Andy, Hilary and Sheila Russell) visited the school and surroundings in December 2007. Since our day (1950's) the road from Eldoret has been realigned, so I failed to spot any of the landmarks I was expecting until I saw the squash court standing alone in the field that used to be the polo ground. The school looked much as shown in other "Kaptagat Today" pictures on this web site, so though we took loads of pictures I haven't added many of the school itself. We met the deputy head (but the school was closed for the Christmas holiday). He said that the pool was being renovated, and showed us where they were building a new Library behind the headmaster's office - but the funds for both of these projects are meagre.

We drove down to see the waterfall, and were amazed at how large and beautiful it was - there are some pictures of it below.

We also spent an hour or so wandering round the Kaptagat Arms. The gardens are in good shape, and the rooms looked clean and in good repair. The bar and dining room were not great, but we regretted not trying at least one night there.

Sadly, just a week after we were there, the election riots erupted, with Eldoret at the centre of the violence. Though I've tried to make contact, we've not heard how badly the Kaptagat area was affected.
Pictures by Andy Russell, taken Dec 2007. The school, the waterfall and the Kaptagat Arms as they are today.
Some of the staff. Timothy Onzere (deputy head) and his wife Joyce and others.
The Hall - almost unchanged since 1950's. Hilary Matthews (Russell) and Sheila de Bellaigue (Russell)
The stage trapdoor - still there. Andy Russell and Sheila de Bellaigue (Russell)
A character from the "Canterbury Tales" painted on the walls of the classroom nearest the hall, by Pa Richardson in the early 1950's. This was covered up by David Jupp's "Classical Garden" painting. The latter has peeled off or been removed to reveal this once again.
Another of the "Canterbury Tales" characters. This time you can see part's of Jupp's painting (the trees) over the top (compare with the picture from 1962, below, and the scene to the left of centre)
David Jupp's "African" painting at the other end of the classroom block. Bet some of those desks were in use in the 50's.
"Fonny Fosters", the house at the end of the road behind the school near the waterfall. The back is as it was, the front has been rebuilt with red painted brickwork.
The waterfall from above. Beautiful.

Kaptagat Arms Hotel - main building. Gardens still in excellent condition
Hotel - looking back from the main building to the car park
Hotel - the bar (as was - now a function room, a bit dilapidated)
Hotel - The pair of cottage rooms nearest the river
The river gardn. The river is on the left and the view is looking back towards the hotel. The shack belongs to a tennis court (where once was golf course fairway)
